“To get a Senate majority and even to make it a little more permanent, you have to start looking certainly in purple states and even some reddish states, and we spent a lot of time doing that,” Schumer told me & @LauraEWeiss16 earlier this week. “We try to find candidates who really fit the states, not fit the national Democratic Party”

GOP Sens. Mike Lee and John Cornyn are fighting on X over the SAVE Act Cornyn tells Lee he doesn’t have the votes & adds: “Try focusing on Democrats instead of Republicans. Republican on Republican attacks are hurting our chances to win the majority in November.”
On what planet is this an attack on Republicans? We have majority support for the bill. In this rare circumstance, we should put it on the floor and keep debating it until it passes. That’s not an attack on Republicans. That’s a plan of attack against voter fraud.

The Senate Intelligence Committee could hold a confirmation hearing for Clayton as soon as next week, but that all depends on how quickly the panel gets Clayton’s paperwork. DNI is a Cabinet-level job, so it requires 30 hours of debate on the Senate floor after a cloture vote.

News: Thune says Jay Clayton “has a great reputation as being an incredibly competent manager.” Called Clayton “a very qualified professional with a great skill set.” Says he’ll try to get him confirmed “as quickly as possible” but acknowledged that probably can’t happen before June 19, which is when Pulte becomes acting DNI. “I don’t know what ‘realistic’ is, but we’re gonna probe the limits of it.” Thune adds he did not get a heads up from Trump about the Clayton announcement.

Also, Trump does NOT say here that Pulte won’t take over as acting DNI on June 19. The Senate can’t process Clayton’s nomination before then. Dems may be heartened by the Clayton announcement but will almost certainly demand that Pulte not assume the acting role on June 19.

Thune says Democrats have decided to block FISA/702 “because they don’t like the person President Trump has put in as a temporary acting role. These aren’t linked.” “I just don’t get it.” Thune suggests ONE-WEEK extension because Pulte doesn’t start as acting DNI till June 19
