Dear
@Spectator,
Let's talk about patriotism and duty to one's country. 79 years ago today, my American grandfather Raymond Meyerson stormed the beaches of Normandy to help liberate Europe from the Nazis. The generation of British soldiers he fought with returned home and created the NHS.
75 years later, we NHS staff fought through the pandemic ultimately witnessing 225,000 people die — including over 2,000 of our dear colleagues — as we protected this country from the greatest threat since WWII.
Real patriots step up for their country in its time of need. They do so with a sense duty to their nation. In my book, NHS staff fit that bill perfectly. What patriots don't do is destroy their nation's healthcare system, ruin people's lives, and exploit a crisis so they can get rich. Only
@Conservatives would do that.
The Greatest Generation would roll in their graves to see how this militant, greedy, and corrupt Tory government destroyed the health system that their generation fought so hard to achieve. They would be horrified that NHS dentistry, general practice, and mental health services were gutted by this government's greed. They would be furious that the
@Conservatives had intentionally engineered the worst GP, A&E, cancer, and outpatient waiting lists in NHS history at 7.3 million people long, all to push more patients into private healthcare. They would class this govt's premeditated assault on the health of this nation and their callous disregard for the lives of hundreds of thousands of people — all for their own financial benefit — as nothing short of domestic terrorism.
And I have no doubt they would back anyone who fought for it — especially striking NHS staff — because like
@Harryslaststand, they knew what life was like without an NHS. They saw the horror of having to watch loved ones die because they couldn't afford healthcare.
Their enduring legacy is saving us from fascism and creating the NHS. Your legacy is burning it all down.
So to answer your question: "Have we betrayed the D-Day generation?" The answer is Yes. YOU most definitely have. But we NHS staff are still fighting to preserve what they fought for. And there's nothing more patriotic than that.
