The Judge was entirely unprofessional and entered an escalatory spiral that was boorish, unsophisticated, from the 16th Century and what you would expect from a child.
That’s not how you achieve maximum outcome and how to de-escalate and accomplish goals.
Instead the Judge just punched down on someone at an extreme power disadvantage. What a bully. It served no purpose other than to make the Judge look like a caricature himself, like the character Eric Cartman from Southpark “respect my authori-tay “.
Defendants are often disenfranchised, angry, fearful, churning with anxiety or rage or using anger as a defence against their regret or shame or fear.
Maybe they are neurodivergent or have specific learning or processing disabilities or maybe they have a “pressure of speech” from acute arousal and fear or underlying psychiatric issues.
A professional Judge should know these things. And maybe instead of acting like a child and engaging in a futile shouting match and showing what a tough guy he is, the Judge could have taken a step back tried to identify a different strategy and work to diffuse the situation. Maybe even try to engage the defendant, rather than dripping with arrogance.
Maybe even showing a little bit of humanity would have changed the outcome of the County having to pay for 6 months improvement to instead having a defendant who might engage with the system and be motivated for rehab.
The so called “Judge” demonstrated himself to be completely lacking in emotional intelligence and was just a constipated thinker.
The so called “Judge” is a disgrace to the County that hired him and he should be professionally sanctioned.
