beautifully worded. all very true. does not sound like the "old" (ie., younger) Bob Dylan at all. "old king from some vanished country"--striking metaphor.
Bob Dylan in the NYT today, in a piece where artists in their 80s were asked to describe the best and worst parts of being that age, and whether they had advice for the president on his reaching the milestone. (Dylan apparently passed on the final question, not surprisingly.)

This is truly horrendous. Curaçao have just scored their first ever World Cup goal and have momentum and then they stop the game for commercials. Absolutely detest this. No place for this nonsense in football.

Every single referee should be standing firm and threatening to pull out of the World Cup. This is how a Union works. One voice and equality.

Exactly. When it suits, and only when politically and commercially expedient, FIFA will suspend member countries, sanction officials, take necessary action. But never when there’s money to be made, political points to be scored, if Infantino’s opportunity to take Oval Office photos is compromised, or when basic principles, ethics or morality are at risk. Although we’ve had many shocking World Cups from Mussolini 34, Argentina military junta 78, Russia after Crimea in 2018, and many worker deaths in Qatar, the 2026 Trump World Cup with an absent FIFA is an absolute doozy. Mistreating players, staff, fans, racism against some countries entering the US and being treated as criminals, while others are feted. Horrendous. Not just Infantino, but the whole Council, and silent Federations pocketing the cash are accountable for what they’ve allowed to occur. Thank god, the football will start soon.
NEW @TheAthleticFC Infantino floats in & out of the Oval Office, hangs out with Trump officials, squeezes host cities for cash & cloaks FIFA in MAGA. Now, FIFA wants to be considered powerless. Free to read column on Gianni’s visa disasterclass. nytimes.com/athletic/7344372…

What has happened to safe spaces for women, being safe on your workplace, tackling policy not the person? Anyone seen comments from female leaders Liberal Jess Wilson, Pauline Hanson One Nation and Greens Larissa Waters?

I am absolutely fed up with the relentless targeting of Grace Tame. Let's be clear. There is a difference between fair criticism and a public pile-on. What we keep seeing directed at Grace is not constructive debate. It is constant scrutiny, personal attacks, outrage cycles and a level of judgment that seems reserved for women who dare to speak too loudly, too honestly or too unapologetically. Grace Tame survived child sexual abuse. She helped change laws. She gave a voice to countless survivors. She has spent years doing work that most people would never have the courage to do. Yet the attacks never seem to stop. A few weeks ago it was the Prime Minister taking aim at her. Now it's Charlie Pickering. Before that, countless commentators, columnists and social media critics. Different names, same pattern. And frankly, it disgusts me. No, women in public life should not be immune from criticism. Nobody is. But there is a world of difference between criticism and the kind of sustained public hounding that seeks to diminish, discredit and exhaust someone. As someone who has experienced public judgment and media attacks, I know how destructive these campaigns can be. They reduce human beings to caricatures. They erase context. They encourage outrage while ignoring the very real emotional toll on the person at the centre of it. What troubles me most is that women who survive violence are so often expected to be perfect. The moment they become angry, outspoken, political, imperfect or inconvenient, they are treated as fair game. Grace Tame has contributed more to the conversation about sexual abuse and survivor advocacy in this country than most of her critics ever will. Maybe it's time some of the men lining up to take shots at her stopped and asked themselves a simple question: Why are they spending so much energy attacking a survivor instead of supporting the change she helped create? Enough. #gracetame #charliepickering

Following Commissioner Brereton's resignation, there is a lot of work needed to restore public confidence in the National Anti-Corruption Commssion. This has to start with a transparent, merit-based process to appoint the next Commissioner.
