Leadership is often perceived as a static set of skills or characteristics that one either possesses or does not. However, this perception fails to capture the dynamic and context-dependent nature of leadership.  The description I use “Leadership is an improvisational practice that occurs in a group in a particular set of circumstances” encapsulates this complexity. I’ll dissect this statement to explain my understand of its implications and how it reshapes understanding of effective leadership. - typeshare.co/shauncoffey/pos…

So almost 60% of private schools are special schools, cf 10% of state. I guess this would help account for some of this difference. gov.uk/government/statistics… That said, only 22% of private pupils appear to have an EHC plan (is my reading of the FT story). So 42% is still high.
42% of private school pupils in England get extra time in exams because of ADHD, dyslexia, or other diagnoses. FT’s article focuses on the difference vs state schools but their numbers are also crazy high. This is a serious cultural defect, and not only in the UK.

Enjoyed this, and especially the points in support of public R&D funding On basic research: “the value of an idea goes way beyond the value captured by the person who created it” “You're stumbling around in the dark, and then someone finds something, they flip on a light switch…When I turn that light on, I create all that value from everyone else being able to see, but I don't capture it myself”

Key point: R&D is investment, not consumption. Why not rebadge UKRI budgets as capital not day-to-day spend, while we're doing the right thing with the fiscal rules?
