"Sensemaking starts in chaos." Weick et al, on enactment theory: pubsonline.informs.org/doi/1…
A major feature of American discourse right now is surprise/disbelief ("how could this happen!"/"this isn't who we are!") suggests a massive failure in the selection & retention loops.
ALT Figure showing that "sensemaking can be treated as reciprocal exchanges between actors (Enactment) and their environments (Ecological Change) that are made meaningful (Selection) and preserved (Retention). However, these exchanges will continue only if the preserved content is both believed (positive causal linkage) and doubted (negative causal linkage) in future enacting and selecting. Only with ambivalent use of previous knowledge are systems able both to benefit from lessons learned and to update either their actions or meanings in ways that adapt to changes in the system and its context."
Things can be shocking, even if they are not surprising. Our first post is not what was planned, but it is what needs to be said. Making sense amidst the American coup. liminalcreations.com/latest/…
A GIF to contemplating #ambiguity, #interpretation, and simultaneous truths.
"For every sense and every component of human judgment, there are illusions and ambiguities we interpret arbitrarily." vox.com/science-and-health/2…
