Our community is shaken by tonight’s shooting at Valley Fair, a mall shared by both Santa Clara and San Jose. I’m praying for the victims and grateful for the rapid work of our law enforcement partners. Santa Clara stands ready to support San Jose and all those affected.
Today’s prison sentence confirms: betraying public trust is criminal. Becker leaked confidential documents to the 49ers and lied under oath, putting special interests above our community. Santa Clara deserves leaders who serve the people—not those who sell them out.
“We have a lot of large companies in this valley – Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, the list goes on and on,” Rosen said. “And the behavior of the 49ers in this case is not something I’ve seen from any of those other companies.” So true!
District attorney Jeff Rosen bashed the #49ers for their role in the perjury case of Santa Clara City Council member Anthony Becker. He was convicted of perjury today. The 49ers "need to act differently," Rosen said afterward. Full story:

Anthony Becker’s felony conviction highlights a deeply troubling and consistent pattern of misconduct and betrayal of public trust in Santa Clara. (1 of 4)
As multiple Grand Jury reports have documented, it’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to undue influence and lack of transparency in the way the City Council and some City staff interact with the 49er organization.
The people of Santa Clara deserve a government that operates legally and ethically. I ask our residents and City staff to demand of us the highest standards and expose further wrongdoing so that we can restore integrity at City Hall.

Starting in 2016, with a different City Council, assisted by a strong and independent City staff,
we tried to fix the mistakes and had one major victory: stopping the team from lowering its own rent in 2017.
But the team took over the City Council in 2020 and City staff was fired for standing up for the City. Since then, the 49er Five have acted in the team’s interest and against Santa Clara’s interests – costing the City millions of dollars.
3) We will ask for the City Council and the public to discuss the report at our next Council meeting and commit to implementing its recommendations within 60 days.
4) Additionally, we urge Santa Clarans to be involved. According to our own public surveys, Santa Clara residents have lost faith in City Hall since the 2020 council shift. We must regain that trust before we can invest in our City or prepare for our future.
