I think a lot of people overestimate just how much Internet - especially the old Internet - the Wayback Machine has saved. There seems to be an assumption that everything which has ever existed online *must* be out there, somewhere, and that isn’t true.

There's nothing like rummaging around in the archives of a site that's been around since 2006, clicking on the links of the sites they recommend, and every single one being a dead link. An entire internet, lost. And we were told whatever we put online was forever.

It's hard to blame people for being confused by social security when the program was specifically set up this way to confuse them. Why? Because the fundamental logic is so clearly unsound: the average person is promised more money out, in real terms, than they pay in.

I rewatched one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and I forgot that at one point the East India Trading Company straight up blackmails Davy Jones into working for them. It’s like if Amazon captured a Lovecraftian elder god but only made it deliver packages.
