More ecologically sustainable beekeeping requires better evidence based understanding of as well as by different beekeeping actors
Conflicts around high honey bee densities in urban environments, impacts on wild pollinators and possible solutions. Wild bee advocates, beekeepers and government need to work together. besjournals.onlinelibrary.wi…

Many small producers would be caught out by the tests. Anyone who feeds autumn syrup and doesn’t follow up with comb change in spring will likeky have processed sugar residue present which could cause a test to fail your product. DNA tests also not reliable where exotic 🌸grow.

Bee careful what you wish for! Tests cost £. Nobody wants adulterated honey but this proposed test will hit the wrong target. Most BKA members are small scale artisan beekeepers. This is not where the problem of adulterated honey lies.
There’s currently a petition doing the rounds created by staincross apiaries demanding all honey products submit to authenticity tests. Whilst there is a need to filter out adulterated foreign imports, subjecting small artisan producers to testing fees will wipe them all out

Are you a community group wanting to help bees and other pollinators? You could receive £2000 from @kewgardens @GrowWildUK to plant native British wild flowers to help pollinators. growwild.kew.org/apply-grant…

Mono floral heather honey is not something @LondonBeeKeeper can help with but please RT to find the person who can
@KewScience needs heather honey for really cool research into self medicating bumblebees. Perhaps @britishbee could help find members who could supply e.g. #Devon #Cornwall #Yorkshire

Can #beekeeping become more ecologically sustainable?

@LondonBeeKeeper & all #beekeepers this sounds like a good opportunity to find out more about the #naturalworld of #bees (all bees) & other #pollinators

Just look at these fabulous plants gracing our school grounds, all thanks to a grant we received from @LondonBeeKeeper! Our TCES East London pupils did a great job planting them out under expert guidance from @apiculturalLdn - perfect for #NationalGardeningWeek! #RHSGrowWithIt

The London Bee Situation is what it is. There is evidence that high densities of honey bee colonies can be associated with animal welfare issues, ecological sustainability and public nuisance issues. But are these issues innately about the bee or the keeping?
In #London, #Savethebees has become a very problematic narrative. No doubt well-intended, it is too often un-informed, ill-informed or deliberately exploited, resulting in h bee density issues in some areas. @LondonBeeKeeper trying to illuminate & mitigate lbka.org.uk/london.html

LBKA tries to be honest and open about the issues and to promote a more well-informed narrative about bees, managed & wild, and other pollinators, and is on the road to developing more ecologically sustainable beekeeping practices. To find out more visit lbka.org.uk

I have recently given a talk to quite a few BKAs on @LondonBeeKeeper 's developing position on sustainability. They all totally get there is a biodiversity issue. Yesterday, gave same talk to @LinklatersLLP ESG Academy. They get it. But still there are some pushing old dtory 🙄

Perfect antidote to anxiety over #ClimateChange #BiodiversityCrisis etc. H. sapiens’ worst is but a blip between the formation of the solar system 4.6 billion years ago and Earth’s consumption by the sun’s Red Giant phase 5 billionish years from now

Some counties in France are dealing with thousands of nest removals every year and the numbers just keep rising. Huge increase in hospitalisations and deaths from stings. This will cost us £millions to control if they establish.

In surge years such as this one their numbers can swell very quickly. If you think ivy mining bee or tree bumblebee colonised quickly just watch how fast these things take over. In less than 20 years the progeny of a single queen has taken over France, Spain, Portugal Belgium!

Studies show their diet is 30% honey bees, 70% other inverts. The bulk appears to be Diptera, other vespids, other bees, spiders. They can severely deplete invertebrate prey for other predators which then turn to honey bees out of lack of other prey.

Interesting coverage on the Jeremy Vine show. Clearly an issue for beekeepers. Not sure if it’s an issue for wild bees and other biodiversity - probably depends how abundant they become.
