It is important that the world does not remain silent in response to this latest act of Russian barbarism. This strike on the Lavra is an attack on the Christian community and on the cultural heritage of humanity. There can be no justification for this or for any other similar Russian attacks. What is needed is more cooperation to stop Russia’s war and stronger protection to save lives from Russia.

Russia keeps rebuilding the northern road into occupied Crimea, and Ukraine keeps tearing it back down. Overnight on 15 June, Ukrainian drones struck the Chonhar and Henichesk bridges again, two of a handful of land links onto the peninsula. Occupation officials closed the Dzhankoi crossing, then reopened the one-way passage across a pontoon bridge for cars only. It becomes a loop on repeat: a span is hit, a pontoon goes up, trucks stack into long queues, and the pontoon gets hit too. On the peninsula, fuel and everyday goods are running short. At the same time, supply trucks get hunted across all major highways in the occupied territory Ukraine calls the effort its Logistics Lockdown. 🔗 euromaidanpress.com/2026/06/…

Few things feel more New York than a Knicks championship and the Puerto Rican Day Parade on the same day. Today, we celebrated the culture, history, and contributions of Puerto Rican New Yorkers who shape every borough and help make this the greatest city in the world.

The King and Queen, joined by members of the Royal Family, have attended a Service for the Most Noble Order of the Garter at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. 📜 Established by King Edward III nearly 700 years ago, The Order of the Garter is the oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry in Britain. Companions of the Garter are chosen personally by the Sovereign to honour those who have held public office, who have contributed in a particular way to national life or who have served the Sovereign personally.

I was thinking about this too. Russia targeted so many culturally important sites in a day not by accident. They are deliberately erasing our culture.
On a single day, Russian terrorists attacked: - Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra - National Dovzhenko Film Studio - National Reserve «Mystetskyi Arsenal» (Art Arsenal) - Innovative Terminal of Nova Poshta - The building of the High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) - Educational institutions, including Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv - The House of Organ and Chamber Music in Dnipro - The Center for Children’s and Youth Creativity in Sumy - Kharkiv Zoo - Energy infrastructure - Residential districts and apartment buildings - And other sites. And all of this they call «retaliatory strikes» and claim that the «targets have been hit». These are the kinds of targets they have… Can one possibly be an even greater monster?

The Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra will be restored. Thanks to the professionalism and swift actions of our emergency responders, the fires have been extinguished. Russia attempted to destroy the Lavra for a second time – just as it did in 1941. Thankfully, we will not have to rebuild this Ukrainian shrine from its foundations. The Government will secure funding for its restoration. As President Zelenskyy noted, the Government is preparing decisions to allocate resources from the reserve fund for urgent roof stabilization and its subsequent restoration. We expect a response from international organizations to yet another barbaric act by Russia. I have instructed Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Affairs Tetiana Berezhna @BerezhnaT to intensify this work, including through the tools of the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Fund. Since early morning, I have also received numerous messages from representatives of Ukrainian businesses and philanthropists willing to contribute to the restoration of this sacred site. Thank you for your shared values and readiness to help. The Government, together with the reserve administration, will organize this process. My deepest gratitude goes to Ukraine’s Defense Forces and the State Emergency Service teams, who are working selflessly at the attack site to save lives and protect our cultural heritage. 🇺🇦

It looks as though Vladimir Putin may have ordered an arson attack against the British Prime Minister last year. That is an incredibly serious escalation and shows why we must redouble our efforts with Ukraine and the rest of Europe to resist and deter Putin’s aggression.

Last night’s strikes by Russia on one of Kyiv’s holiest sites, the Pershka Lavra monastery, are an abhorrent act by Putin: a deliberate act of sacrilege in his increasingly desperate assault on Ukraine. Britain will support Ukraine's call for action from UNESCO, and - following yesterday’s shadow fleet interdiction in the English Channel - we will continue doing everything we can to increase our pressure on the Russian war machine.
By striking the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of the greatest holy sites of Christianity, Putin has forever put his name on the list of history’s worst barbarians. He should be damned for centuries. And he will lose this war. From the Horde in the 13th century to the Nazis and Bolsheviks in the 20th century, Kyiv’s sacred monasteries have suffered numerous barbarically attacks. Now we are dealing with Russian terrorists who have already outmatched ISIS in their crimes against cultural heritage. Only Russian scum who have nothing sacred can deliberately damage the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a unique UNESCO heritage site under special protection. We will be urgently initiating all relevant procedures within UNESCO and all other international mechanisms, demanding immediate and adequate responses to this state barbarism. We expect strong reactions by international institutions and capitals. No vague words, silence, or weak steps. We need action now to stop Russian barbarism.

10 years ago my wife, the mum of our kids & the MP for Batley&Spen was killed by a far right extremist. At anniversaries I try to be optimistic about the future. But not this time. In the ten years since she was killed we have gone backwards & I fear our democracy is now at risk
