Sometimes we will pause music making for a week to do a little traditional literacy. While music literacy is important for the well rounded person, traditional reading skills are essential for life. By choosing quality stories we can learn about music while flexing our reading.

You hear chaos. I hear progress. 5th grade was given a score, asked to decode it and add instruments after having learned how to sing the song by rote. Grateful to @Quaver_Ed for quality resources for hands on, real world learning!

In music, we use critical thinking skills to analyze rhythmic patterns. Students are dissecting the song and figuring out how to play, engaging in communication skills to collaboratively work, and using reading to “speak” the language of music. Wow! That’s a lot for our brains!

Our big idea for unit one is RHYTHM and how does rhythm function as form. Everybody has worked hard to get to the point where we are reading and playing. Did you know that rhythm reading functions the same way that reading language does in the brain? Music is literacy!
