A statement from the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project team about yesterday’s Supreme Court decision to end affirmative action.
ALT Yesterday, the United States Supreme Court issued a decision reversing decades of legal precedent regarding affirmative action in higher education admissions. As an organization whose mission is to increase the access to education and help public school students on the path to constitutional literacy, we recognize that affirmative action provided a ladder to help level the playing field for scores of Black and Latine students and others who suffer from race-based discrimination. Many of those students are the very Scholars our Teaching Fellows around the nation have taught since our inception in 1999. Now, that ladder has been knocked away by our nation's highest court.
ALT One of the namesakes of the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project is none other than the late Justice Thurgood Marshall. In his pre-Supreme Court career, Justice Marshall led the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund and successfully argued to overturn the unjust “separate but equal” policy in front of that very court. Justice Marshall valued equality in access to education. Just like our namesake, we will not stop fighting to increase access to education for our Scholars and others like them, even when the Supreme Court tears down America’s progress.
For Our Scholars,
The Marshall-Brennan Team
