Every time I post a version of this 🧵 I hear from ppl uncomfortable w/the BDSM connotations. Yes. That is part of the point. Long past time to renounce Christian parenting “spanking” liturgies. Some children experience“spanking” as CSA & it also grooms for further abuse.
I invite the spanking defenders to sit w/this entire 🧵 *You are 3 yrs old.* Daddy comes over to where you are playing. His voice is calm, but his face is mad. “I told you to pick up your toys, didn’t I? You didn’t obey me, did you? You know what that means,” he says.

5 ways Christians have told me spanking directly harmed them: 1. Disbelief in God's forgiveness (sin must be absolved with pain) 2. S€xual arousal or dysfunction 3. Fearful to advocate for themselves 4. Vulnerable to abuse (bc love & pain coexist) 5. Religious scrupulosity

It’s their advice I am critiquing, not the connection itself. I would hope they would self-reflect re: why a notorious abuser was recommending an article that tells victims to empathize with their abusers. Instead they repubbed it. If you read the article you will likely see the problems. Wrote a bit more about it here: open.substack.com/pub/mburtw…

Welp The James Dobson Institute is out here today sending along the same article Epstein recommended back in 2019. Perhaps it’s time for some institutional self-reflection Why might a notorious abuser be drawn to a Dobson article on children cultivating empathy for abusive

Remember how Epstein recommended a Dobson article to, presumably, one of his victims? @FocusFamily, which, like so many evangelical institutions, seems incapable of self-reflection or listening to impact statements & emailed that same article out again today.

Book covers are especially interesting, because they reveal what is being marketed - both what is being sold & what is expected to sell - and indicate underlying beliefs of authors & readers. Find the rest of the series in the highlight labeled "Covers" - Loving the Little
