3 years ago, the Mayor's Juvenile Justice Advisory Group recommended a robust plan for community-based services to support youth & address behavior like curfew violations w/o system involvement. The report, like many others, was ignored. #carenotcontrol ovsjg.dc.gov/sites/default/f…

The emergency bill before the Council today is likely to pass in some form. But there is still time to minimize some of the harm from the worst pieces of the bill (i.e., adult detention) & ensure that there are at least some proactive pieces in the bill.

Proud of all of them, especially some familiar faces I see in that happy group!
They did it! The very first cohort of the Trinity-Coolidge Early College Academy received their degrees yesterday! These marvelous young scholars proved that early college is a success! @trinitydc @CoolidgeECA @dccoolidgeshs @dcpublicschools @DCPSChancellor @OSSEDC @DMEforDC

This is how. Episodic crime reporting is harmful to victims and might lead to increased gun violence and inappropriately harsh policing based on perceptions of danger. Peer-reviewed article linked below. sciencedirect.com/science/ar… @ZacharyforWard5 @PCGVR

We are happy to help. My email and phone number are on my Twitter bio. How am I promoting crime, by increasing public awareness? Please explain.

Proud to visit @aehollowell's class @DukeU for the 11th straight year! We became close talking about losing a father. Today, I got to tell his class that now he knows my son, Andy, named after my father. Zoom isn't as good as in person, so I hope to be back at Duke next year!

Long sentences do not deter crime. We must & will find non-carceral solutions for preventing illegal guns from coming into DC & for getting them off the street. (4/5)

Before this was about #statehood, @heritage said the commission's report "reflects commonsense, constitutional principles endorsed by parties across the political spectrum" and, "The principles behind these recommendations are not new or controversial." heritage.org/courts/commenta…
Decreasing penalties for crimes amidst a crime surge demonstrates how out of touch DC lawmakers are with their constituents. D.C. residents deserve better than a city council that votes against their interests and safety and favors prioritizing criminals.

Shameful. Shameful. Based on fear mongering, not facts.
I support D.C. Statehood and home-rule – but I don’t support some of the changes D.C. Council put forward over the Mayor’s objections – such as lowering penalties for carjackings. If the Senate votes to overturn what D.C. Council did – I’ll sign it.

This is a fundamental statement of morality. I believe we must be on the right side of this issue. As Governor, I will not issue any execution warrants during my term.

This is actually the book I’m currently reading. In other news, when called to jury duty today, I was not selected (when called for jury duty for the first time in 18 years in DC)…

Don’t know whether it’s the algorithm or what, but I’m seeing a lot of people talking junk about ChAllen. Thanks @charlesallen for imagining a future that isn’t grounded in the racialized violence of policing. Our communities deserve better. Young people of color deserve to live.
