After 14 years of negotiations, 🇲🇪🇪🇺 are closer than ever.
Last week, a historic step has been taken to approve a working group to draft Montenegro's accession treaty — the first such step since Croatia joined in 2013.
Here's where the process stands 👇
ALT Infographic titled “Accession Process: Montenegro – Where does it stand?” on a blue background. It outlines four steps toward Montenegro joining the EU. Step 1: “Close remaining negotiating chapters,” noting 14 closed and 19 to go. Step 2: “Draft the accession treaty,” approved by an ad hoc working group, the 22 April 2026 Council Commission, and requiring agreement from the European Parliament. Step 3: “Treaty signed,” requiring all 27 EU countries plus Montenegro to sign and ratify. Step 4: “Montenegro joins the EU,” suggesting it could become the EU’s 28th member state. Icons accompany each step, including scales of justice, a document, a treaty certificate, and an EU flag.
