The EU-funded @MINOUW2015 project combined science & innovation with fishers expertise, to develop fishing technologies and practices that reduce #bycatch and contribute to discard-free fisheries. Read the outcome of the research ⤵️ minouw-project.eu/ #SustainableFisheries

To protect long-term livelihoods, fishers need to adopt #selective measures. As @VSinkevicius has stated, overfishing could see 1 in 5 jobs in fisheries disappear by 2025. Effective actions to protect stocks are the only way to guarantee a sustainable future for fisheries.

Problems with overfishing have been known for years. We have the solutions to achieve #sustainable fisheries, but resistance to change from all sides has caused a crisis. Important steps have been taken at #AgriFish 2021, but are incentives to adopt selectivity strong enough?

The adoption of selective measures at #AgriFish 2021 to combat overfishing is a welcome step in the right direction. As MINOUW's work has shown, adopting greater #selectivity is one of the key tools for mitigating overfishing and achieving #sustainable fisheries.

With catch limits and fisheries closures also included in the multi-annual plan for the Western Mediterranean, important precedents have been set for fisheries management and protecting stocks. We need to build on this progress.

"The measures agreed today are not only sound for the marine environment. They are also timely and forward-looking social and economic measures", said @VSinkevicius at #AGRIFISH. Read more about the 2022 agreement for Mediterranean and Black Sea #GFCM ec.europa.eu/oceans-and-fish…

It's time to implement solutions we know will work. Studies show sorting grids reduce juvenile fish in catches by up to 40%. Adopting more selective methods is a key part of protecting stocks and moving towards #sustainable fisheries. #Agrifish #SSFForum vimeo.com/652045871

The 2021 December #AGRIFISH EU Council is an opportunity to show political leadership. We know the solutions to the problems facing the Western Mediterranean - we need to take the decision to act.

Don't miss our #SSFForum session on more selective fishing by @WWF_Med! We will tackle the pervasive problem of #bycatch #discarding & incidental catch of vulnerable species in #Mediterranean fisheries with experts from 🇮🇹 & 🇵🇹 📅 Today / 15.30-17.00 ❓fao.org/gfcm/ssfforum

The greatest threat to fishers livelihoods are not the impacts of measures to protect stocks from overfishing, but the threat of stock collapse if we do nothing, and carry on as we are now. #AGRIFISH bit.ly/31IjUJF

None of the management scenarios under evaluation will achieve sustainable fisheries in the Western Mediterranean by 2025. With stocks fished at 2.71 times the Maximum Sustainable Yield, more drastic measures are needed to be taken at #AGRIFISH 2021. bit.ly/31IjUJF

Ahead of the 2021 #AGRIFISH EU Council meeting, the EU and member states can no longer afford to ignore the crisis facing fisheries in the Western Mediterranean. With stocks chronically overfished, their future hangs in the balance. bit.ly/31IjUJF

In 15 experimental trials the Viareggio fleet fishing for caramote prawn in Tuscany showed that guarding nets reduced discards of crabs and gastropods by a massive 4.5 tons per year – 75% of previous discards. 1/2

This represents an immediate saving in fishing days available to #fishers through cutting time and labour in cleaning nets, and reducing the costs of replacing/repairing nets. It is also an immediate boost to the stock of caramote prawn, crabs and other gastropods. 2/2

Because multiple studies have found this to be the case. A 2018 study found that southern Iberian hake stock levels had stabilised and were growing because of the increased use of #selective fishing gear, bringing tangible benefits for fishers. 1/2

Hake yield had increased six-fold and discards had decreased by more than 20%. The researchers noted that “measures that improve selectivity obtain better results than sales ban strategies in terms of increasing yields and stocks and reducing discards.” 2/2

Studies show that greater selectivity helps rebuild fish stocks: undersized target catch (particularly juveniles) can escape and grow to maturity, and less non-target catch is landed or discarded, contributing to a healthier marine ecosystem. 1/2

In the long-term, #fishers will benefit from increased yields as stocks of target species are replenished. In the more immediate future, they profit from reduced sorting and disposal costs, and a decrease in net damage caused by non-target catch. 2/2
