A man in Ruiru reportedly withdrew KSh1.2 million in cash from a local bank, drove home and parked his Toyota Mark X in an apartment basement in Kihunguro.
He stored the money in the boot, probably believing it was safer there than carrying it around.
Unfortunately, unknown people allegedly interfered with the vehicleβs locking system, opened the boot and disappeared with the entire amount while the car was parked.
Police officers who visited the scene reportedly found signs that the locks had been tampered with. Investigators also suspect the thieves may have had inside information, especially considering they appeared to know exactly where the money had been placed.
The apartment had CCTV cameras, but detectives could not immediately access the footage because the person responsible for the surveillance system was unavailable.
This incident is an important reminder: a locked vehicle is not a safe or a bank vault.
Go-Wheels car-parking safety tips:
Never leave cash, laptops, phones, documents or valuables inside your vehicle, including the boot. After visiting a bank, avoid driving directly home or stopping in isolated places because criminals may follow you. Park in well-lit and properly guarded areas, confirm that the doors have actually locked, and never leave your car keys with unknown attendants. When carrying a large amount of money, use secure electronic transfers or request professional security assistance.
