Not the World Cup, but the next best thing, and along with France ‘98 it’s my favourite tournament to date.
England v Scotland - Seaman penalty save, Gazza wonder goal, and…erm…questionable ‘banter’.
As 90’s football goes, it didn’t get much better than this
“So now England can relax, safe in the knowledge that only a heavy defeat by Holland can deny them a quarter-final place”.
Not sure what happened next…
It’s 24 years since this Jared Borgetti brilliance vs Italy.
Facing the wrong way, with the mighty Maldini and Buffon behind him, he’s got absolutely no business scoring from there.
Sensational stuff.
I was pleasantly surprised at Billy McKinlay being open to the idea of England winning it, and not instantly being dismissive in usual England/Scotland pantomime banter fashion.
I watched the full match of Italy vs Ireland from USA ‘94 on ITVX earlier.
One thing that stood out: Brian Moore’s commentary.
He was absolutely outstanding. The dynamics, tempo and texture of his delivery were a joy. Big Ron also complimented him perfectly.
How he is missed.
Thierry Henry on the biggest stage, and winning a World Cup, before he was even considered the superstar he’s now of course known to be.
Skipping challenges like this one became second nature to him.
It’s all kicks off today!
With that, I’m going with two players who would’ve enjoyed the World Cup last time out.
I mean, what a pair of absolute ballers.
“I’d also like to meet Alan Shearer again. I cleaned his boots as a trainee at Southampton and would love to follow in his footsteps”.
Kevin Phillips didn’t get the “hate all Geordies” memo when he signed on at Sunderland.
Wednesday sees us catch a glimpse of the lesser spotted version of Edgar Davids - before his trademark eyewear.
Just one day left until the whole thing kicks off!
30 years ago today at Wembley:
A dilemma for @alanshearer in the opening game of Euro 96.
- Square the ball to an unmarked Teddy Sheringham
- Give it some welly
You know exactly what choice he made…
