HOW TO KNOW IF SOMEBODY IS USING YOUR BVN WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION.
Your BVN is like the key to your money. Once somebody gets it, they can do plenty of things in your name (open accounts, take loans, even use it for fraud)
Today I will show you how to check if anybody is using your BVN behind your back.
FIRST, UNDERSTAND THE DANGER. ⚠️
Some people have your BVN and you do not even know how. Maybe you gave it to a “loan agent.”
Maybe somebody at a small business asked for it for “verification.”
Maybe a worker at a bank or shop saved it down.
If your BVN is in the wrong hands, somebody can open bank accounts in your name to do fraud. Take loans from loan apps and banks using your identity. Tie debts to your name that will follow you for years. You will not even know until your name appears in a credit bureau as somebody who owes money you never collected.
HOW TO CHECK ALL ACCOUNTS LINKED TO YOUR BVN.
There is a free service Nigerian banks provide. Many people do not know about it.
- Step one: Go to nibss website (search on google)
- Step two: Click “BVN linked accounts.”
- Step three: Enter your BVN and follow the steps.
- Step four: They will show you EVERY single account in Nigeria that is linked to your BVN. If you see any account you did not open — that is your evidence somebody is using your name. Walk straight to that bank with your ID and demand they close it.
Or enter your bank to run it all.
Or you can use the USSD Option available.
HOW TO CHECK IF SOMEBODY IS TAKING LOANS WITH YOUR BVN.
Visit any of the three credit bureaus in Nigeria (CRC, FirstCentral, or CreditRegistry.).
They are by law allowed to give you ONE free credit report every year.
- Step one: Visit credit report website
- Step two: Sign up with your BVN and details.
- Step three: Request your free annual credit report.
- Step four: Read it carefully.
Every loan in your name will appear. If you see a loan you did not collect, that is fraud. Report immediately.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND SOMETHING SUSPICIOUS. Walk into your bank. File a formal report. Report the credit bureau directly through their dispute process. Write to CBN Consumer Protection with all evidence.
File a police report so you have legal documentation. The earlier you catch it, the easier it is to clean up.
Stop giving your BVN to anybody who asks. Save this content. Share this post. Check your BVN today. Tag a friend who needs to do the same.
Your finance must get better!
