Not to be outdone by Google's AI overviews... -> Bing testing new generative search experience I see it now, very interesting. A lot to take in on the page... and provides sources per section on-hover and via citation links. "Microsoft explained that this search “experience combines the foundation of Bing’s search results with the power of large and small language models (LLMs and SLMs).” “It understands the search query, reviews millions of sources of information, dynamically matches content, and generates search results in a new AI-generated layout to fulfill the intent of the user’s query more effectively,” searchengineland.com/bing-te…

My latest post on SER went live this morning. That's after digging into GSC to *TRY* and analyze AI overview data. I used Ziptie to identify queries where the site ranked lower on page one in the 10-blue links, but ranked in the AI overview. I should have been able to clearly see the difference in the US. Nope, not clear at all. You can read my post for more information. Here's a quote from the end: "Google said it’s serious about supporting publishers and maintaining a strong web ecosystem. Well, part of supporting publishers is providing data based on how their content is ranking across Search. If Google is serious about AI overviews, then let site owners be serious about tracking those overviews. Right now, that tracking is severely limited…"

I’ve been wondering the same for the past year. Seems to violate many of Google’s guidelines.

Google search is one of the most secretive, closely-guarded black boxes in the world. Well, maybe not anymore. In the last quarter century, no leak of this magnitude or detail has ever been reported from Google’s search division. If you're in #SEO, you should probably see this.

I mentioned yesterday that Google should turn off AI overviews for YMYL queries until they can improve the situation, but I still see those overviews for MANY health/medical queries. Some are totally fine (even good), and some are not fine. And check these two link cards out for the query, "how to lose weight fast". One is an expired domain and the other won't resolve. Oh boy...

Focus on health and medical? Heads-up -> Google AI has better bedside manner than human doctors — and makes better diagnoses. SEO Tip: when doing index coverage analysis for large sites (100K pages), one of my favourite and easiest methods to use is filtering by sitemap. If the site has all of their XML sitemaps submitted individually in Google Search Console, you're able to see data for the total number of pages discovered. When segmenting by a specific sitemap, you're then able to see the breakdown for indexed vs. not indexed pages along with the reasons for why. This of course does come down to how well sites organize their content within their sitemaps. If content is haphazardly grouped together at random, this approach won't be all that useful. But if content is clearly grouped within clear sections by sub-folder and content type, then you've got a winning combo. You're then able to see exactly how many pages from different content segments are indexed by Google. The easiest way of doing this is by selecting 'Pages', clicking the drop-down at the top and selecting the sitemap of interest, then scrolling down to assess the overview metrics and the reasons for exclusion. Another method can also be verifying sub-folders of your site directly in GSC, which can also be a smart approach for working with the API. But I generally prefer using the sitemap filtering method for a quick view – if the correct setup is in place. If you're working with a large site and all of their individual sitemaps haven't been submitted (which won't allow for filtering), then I would go ahead and add them to GSC. Note: you won't be able to see the historic data immediately as the data will start from the day its added. When working with large sites and you're wanting to gain a quick understanding of the problem areas, use the sitemap filtering method. It's a smart approach for SEO analysis that not many are aware of in my experience.
