Why do we test dead birds? Birds play an important role in the West Nile virus cycle, & some species can become sick & die after becoming infected. Testing dead birds helps us identify where the virus is circulating & provides a warning that activity may be increasing in an area.
Last week, the first signs of #WestNileVirus activity were detected in #YoloCounty after a dead bird collected in Woodland tested positive for the virus.
Male mosquitoes do not bite because they don't need to.
They don't need blood so their proboscis (the body part that drinks nectar and juices) cannot easily pierce skin. Thanks guys!

Please note: This application is a preventative public health measure to reduce mosquito populations and help lower the risk of mosquito-borne diseases. The product used consists of a biological insecticide that contains a type of bacteria called Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), which is a naturally occurring bacteria found in soil. It is a safe and effective biological insecticide in controlling insect pests in various environments.
A District biologist will conduct biological monitoring before, during, and after the application to minimize disturbance to sensitive wildlife and habitats.
