This story is based on my friend's experience in China in 2017.
He was on a company visit to Wuhan. He found the city beautiful and impressive. To explore the area, he hired a taxi. The taxi driver was friendly, funny, and respectful. During the ride, the driver showed him some interesting places and recommended a few good restaurants.
When they reached one of the restaurants, my friend decided to have lunch there. Before going inside, he invited the taxi driver to join him for a meal. However, the driver's cheerful expression suddenly changed. He looked uncomfortable and declined the invitation.
According to my friend, the driver explained that he came from a lower social background and felt that people like him were not welcomed in places like that restaurant. He was worried about how others might view his presence there, so he chose not to enter.
The incident left my friend surprised and disappointed. It made him realize that, despite the positive image many people have of a country, every society can have its own hidden social divisions and challenges.
