In the Baltimore Sun, I write about one of the Biden administration's newest policies targeting asylum-seeking families. We must do more to help these families navigate our immigration system and rebuild their lives in this country. baltimoresun.com/opinion/op-…
Last class of scientific evidence seminar. Polled students on how they'd set admissibility standard. 0 = nothing comes in; 10 = everything comes in; 5 = current standard (Daubert/Frye). 1-4 = make standard stricter; 6-9 = make it more lenient. The fascinating results: #evidence
ALT Scale from 0 to 10, with students' votes almost evenly distributed all across the spectrum.
What a treat to join the amazing @DanaLGold & @ChelseaWiseRVA & @AdmissiblePod's fab host Tessa Kramer to chat whistleblowing, democracy, carceral injustice & yes, forensics. If you aren't listening, get on it! Last episode (feat. me!) drops 4/25. Thank you @myVPM & @ICAVCU!
Impressive panel and spicy Q&A tonight at Justice Denied: Unreliable Evidence and Accountability. @AdmissiblePod from @myVPM digs into evidence testing that went awry at the Virginia state crime lab in the 1970s and ’80s that led to over a dozen false convictions. ⚖️
And that's a wrap for the Spring 2023 @UMDLaw Criminal Defense Clinic! I feel like I met these passionate advocates just yesterday, but they did A LOT in 13 weeks. Let me tell you about it.🧵: 1/8
The pics capture smiles, but there were also (uncaptured) tears. These advocates saw clients go to jail. They examined our deeply unjust carceral system and the brutality it imposed on their clients. 7/8
It was hard. But for every client, at every hearing, win or loss, they FOUGHT.
All of us are deeply grateful to our clients for putting their trust in us and to @MarylandOPD for their partnership and support. Until the fall! 8/8
In 2015, police shot Keith Davis several times during a robbery investigation. Davis was acquitted of the robbery, but arrested just a week later on unrelated murder charges—for which he claimed police were framing him to cover up the fact that they had mistakenly shot him. (1/3)
Who won a motion to suppress, a motion for judgment of acquittal, & beat the State's plea offer at their *1st* trial? My incredible @UMDLaw Criminal Defense Clinic students David Karpay @twidder_bot & Skylar Johnson @Skylar_J11. We celebrate fights not wins, but today we won! 🎉
In her convo with @hadleybgreen, @LeighGoodmark gives a 101 on the challenges of coming forward as a survivor of gender-based violence in the criminal legal system. Check out her breakdown of how trauma affects memory from ~2:27-3:18: washingtonpost.com/video/nat…
Heads up Baltimore: Board of Estimates just unanimously approved $920K on new stingray tracking tech. BPD pointed to a “tightly bound unit” w/ a “culture” of "utmost trustworthiness" in response to questions from council pres Nick Mosby about accountability and past misuse... 👀
Baltimore Police use of “stingray” cell site simulator phone tracking technology has been dwindling - because their device was outdated and not working in 5G areas. That’s about to change with purchase of $920k new device thebaltimorebanner.com/commu…
