In honor of Memorial Day, take a close look at these prayer books and missals used by the armed forces during World War II. The back cover of one features raised beads to help count out the prayers of the rosary. Thank you to all veterans and active service members!

This illuminated miniature depicting Pentecost is from a rare French book of hours (a medieval prayer book) in our collection. Who is kneeling next to Mary in the front? It is St. John — a model for devotion to Mary.

These holy cards selected from the U.S. Catholic Special Collection are from the early 20th century. They depict moments of the Triduum, beginning with the Last Supper and Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, leading up to Christ’s Passion and Crucifixion. Now we wait.
