Hi all. I’m moving my social media comm to Instagram @ MarkWeaklandLiteracy. I am unwilling to support Musk and now Alex Jones is back on X and he's the worst. Sandy Hook was a turning point for me (and many others). Can't support this platform. So let’s connect on Instagram!

1. What’s it like to have someone say your words aren’t appropriate for kids? I asked these authors, who have all had their books challenged in Florida schools: @EllenHopkinsLit @MarkWeakland @OhReallyRio @ryanestrada baynews9.com/fl/tampa/news/2…

Some of my favorite concepts and ideas in this book tie directly to the big ideas in reading and science of reading reminders: effective teaching techniques really matter, moving Ss to mastery of phonology and then alphabetic principal are key, reading is always about meaning!

Re 2nd grader w/severe #dyslexia, I suggested to teacher: try teaching ONLY letter form & sound (NO letter names) until basic CVC decoding takes hold. @LexonikST Check out interesting comments & studies around this idea- bit.ly/Shanahan_comments bit.ly/NIH_lettername_study #earlyed

Melissa Stewart continues her string of engaging, high-quality nonfiction books on a wide range of topics. All her books help move children to an understanding of natural systems and an appreciation for Earth. Wonderful!

Spot on @ZinnEdProject. Leveraging terrible laws, a small # of people are trying to erase histories of entire groups of people, as well as deeply personal stories of self & family. Erasing is unAmerican! We all have stories to tell. Let's work to protect our freedom to tell them.
A wonderful picture book, "When Wilma Rudolph Played Basketball" by @MarkWeakland includes her childhood story. It is one of countless books challenged in Florida under the "Stop Woke Act" for being "anti-white" because of its honest reference to racism. bookshop.org/a/7256/97815158…

Yes, thank you @FLFreedomRead! A small number of teachers, parents, & pols are limiting the history, culture, & reading rights of a huge number of parents & children. I believe writer Jamelle Bouie @jbouie called it "legislation by heckling"
They are cutting out other parents from the discussion on what is appropriate for their children. The inclusion of Anne Frank’s feelings as a young girl during that time shows that she was still experiencing the things young girls do during the Holocaust. It’s HER story.

Here's a link to last night's MSNBC report on banning children's books. FL districts tried to ban Jonah Winter's wonderful book on Roberto Clemente, too. Good grief. youtube.com/watch?v=BOn1cmXq… #bannedbooks @CapstonePub #kidlit @FLFreedomRead

My book When Wilma Rudolph Played Basketball is still target of book bans, now in FLA. One racist T, armed w/ FL's Stop WOKE Ace forces a district to erase historical facts, thereby squashing rights of readers! #kidlit @ILAToday @CapstonePress #bannedbooks popular.info/p/meet-the-flor…
