The difference between a good and a great moderator and panel
If you are moderating a panel and someone won't shut up, try these steps:
- If they are good natured but just talkative/excited, gradually increase the intensity of your active listening. Physically lean in (move your chair if you need to), nod more vigorously, raise the volume of your "uh-huhs" and "Yes" until a level where you can naturally step in and change the direction to another speaker. The key is to make the talker think you and he/she are in a mini conversation, then take your turn to speak the way you would with an excited friend.
- If they are being arrogant/dismissive of you or other guests, do the above but don't be afraid to be stern in your eventual interruption/redirection..(loudly) "THAT IS fascinating but I need to get X in here to discuss blah blah blah" ad physically point to/move your body in the direction of the new speaker. The audience will follow and the talker will almost always concede the floor when they have lost attention.
You are the moderator. Maintain control. The audience will respect/appreciate it. Most panelists, even the talkers, will as well.
