ALT DSA Statement. We Stand in Solidarity with Chicago Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez. 6/15/26. DSA stands united against attacks on our members. We are appalled by the rising tide of political violence in this country which culminated last night in an explosive device detonated at the home of Chicago Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez. While we are relieved to hear that Byron and his family are safe, we understand this attack as an attempt at intimidation. Byron’s independent campaign for Congress is a challenge to the political establishment. DSA’s work across the country challenges the status quo and inspires working class people everywhere to organize for a better world. Our opponents believe they can use acts of terror to frighten us into silence, but they are wrong. DSA will ensure our local chapters continue their valuable work with security practices in place to keep our members safe. No one should have to fear retaliation for speaking the simple truth: workers deserve more.

As DSA’s highest political body just adopted an abolitionist tenet to our program, our mayor is backpedaling AND disregarding the program of his political home. This results from an electoral strategy that subordinates the chapter & party to managing the state and minor reforms.

It is long past time that NYC-DSA adopt an explicitly and courageously abolitionist program. Tailing the mayor as he retreats from milque-toast ‘public safety’ abolitionist politics to a law-and-order norm is an irrevocable mistake and sows distrust in the socialist movement.
