The launch of this new #VAWG strategy sets out an important ambition.
It recognises the scale of the issue and sets out the steps needed to make a difference.
I welcome stronger policing measures, new tools, school‑based interventions and tougher action on harmful online content. Education and early intervention are critical.
Here in Merseyside, we’ll use the Strategy’s priorities to strengthen our own work and build on the progress we’ve made over the past three years, putting survivors’ voices at the heart of everything we do.
Every woman and girl in Merseyside deserves to live without fear — at home, in school, at work, online.

My thoughts today are with the hundreds of people affected by the senseless events of 26th May - those who suffered injuries, those who witnessed the harm, and everyone who continues to live with the psychological impact of that day.
The repercussions of this incident have been felt far and wide and, for those most impacted, continue to this day. The incident shocked and appalled us all. Not only here in our city, but millions watching the parade. Given the sheer recklessness and disregard for human life Doyle displayed, it is nothing short of a miracle that no lives were lost that day.
I want to pay tribute to the bravery of members of the public who intervened, particularly Daniel Barr, whose quick thinking and courage in stopping Doyle’s vehicle undoubtedly prevented further injuries and possibly saved lives.
I also want to extend my deepest gratitude to the emergency services who responded with professionalism and compassion in the most challenging circumstances.
This case has involved one of the most extensive investigations in @MerseyPolice's history. Officers and staff dedicated countless hours to gathering evidence, reviewing the distressing footage, supporting victims, and building a case so strong that Doyle had no choice but to plead guilty.
Today’s sentence reflects the gravity of Doyle’s behaviour and the devastating impact it has had on so many lives. It sends a clear message that such reckless disregard for human life will never be tolerated.
This incident is a stark reminder of how one individual’s actions behind the wheel can change lives in an instant.

On Monday 26 May, thousands of people lined the streets to celebrate the @LFC parade.
What should have been a day of celebration for the city turned into a day of fear and anguish after Paul Doyle drove his car into a crowd, injuring more than 100 people.
It is only by sheer luck that nobody was killed as a result of Doyle’s reckless actions.
This video shows Doyle’s aggressive and dangerous driving before he reached Water Street, audio from his dashcam, and footage of his arrest.
This has been one of the most extensive investigations in the history of the force. Over the past seven months, we have supported 134 victims, spoken to more than 1,500 witnesses, and gathered in excess of 700 statements.
In the initial stages, more than 70 officers and staff were dedicated to this investigation, including colleagues from across Merseyside Police and neighbouring forces - @gmpolice, @Cumbriapolice, @LancsPolice, @cheshirepolice, and @NWPolice. We are extremely grateful for their support and collaboration.
Today, Doyle has been sentenced to 21-and-a-half years in prison at Liverpool Crown Court, after pleading guilty to 31 offences on Wednesday 26 November.
We know that a lot of people are still recovering from the injuries they suffered on that day and our thoughts remain with them and those that continue to be affected by the incident ❤️

Yesterday we launched #MythVsFact – a campaign built on survivor voices to tear down the lies that excuse sexual violence. @MerseyPolice
These myths don’t just distort reality – they destroy lives. It’s time to replace them with the truth:
❌ Myth: False rape allegations are common.
✅ Fact: They are extremely rare. Most victims never report at all.
❌ Myth: If someone didn’t fight back, it wasn’t rape.
✅Fact: Many victims experience a “freeze” response during trauma, making resistance impossible.
❌ Myth: It’s not rape if it’s your partner.
✅Fact: Rape is rape, regardless of relationship status.
❌ Myth: Victims provoke attacks by drinking or dressing a certain way.
✅ Fact: Rape is never the victim’s fault. Consent must be freely given every time.
Every fact matters. Every conversation counts.
Together, we can dismantle stigma, challenge harmful attitudes, and make Merseyside safer for everyone. #TakingAction

It’s been 3️⃣ years since I launched the region-wide Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) Delivery Plan setting out a commitment to working in partnership to tackle VAWG across our region.
Today, three years on, I reveal my progress report detailing our key achievements over the last 12 months.
