TODAY'S FIX - BRAIN In this excerpt from Brain Energy, Christopher M. Palmer @ChrisPalmerMD argues that diet affects far more than body weight and cardiovascular health—it also has profound effects on the brain. He suggests that mental health and metabolic health are deeply interconnected through shared neural circuits, hormones, and mitochondrial function. According to Palmer, changes in metabolism can influence mood, cognition, anxiety, addiction, and other mental health conditions, while mental states can also affect metabolism and eating behaviors. Palmer outlines seven ways dietary interventions may improve mental health, including correcting nutrient deficiencies, removing harmful foods, improving the gut microbiome, supporting mitochondrial function, and addressing unhealthy body composition. He places particular emphasis on metabolic health and mitochondrial performance, arguing that these factors influence inflammation, insulin resistance, energy production, and many other processes linked to brain function. bigthink.com/neuropsych/diet…

Amazing things happening inside our affiliates. “Bill is a former Type 2 diabetic who was referred to us by his vascular surgeon. The same surgeon who cut off his right leg below the knee due to complications from diabetes. We’re happy your report Bill now has completely normal HbA1c (aka no longer diabetic), he’s down 25lbs and for the first time in years he's able to do things like home repairs and weedwhacking his yard. He told me all this morning with tears in his eyes. It was truly a beautiful thing. “ Way to go, Bill and team!

🚨🚨🚨 Breaking study in #anorexia research A supervised #keto diet helped 72% of women (13 of 18) drop below clinical thresholds for both anorexia AND depression in just 14 weeks — while keeping BMI stable and dropping anxiety & food compulsions. newscientist.com/article/252…
Years ago, I learned of a published case study describing how a ketogenic diet helped @Carobeckwith recover from a 15-year battle with anorexia. Today's newly published research is a direct result of Caroline and her family's valiant journey, and their determination to help others explore the metabolic intervention that put Caroline's anorexia into remission. At @BaszuckiGroup we've been honored to support @GuidoFrank and his team who designed, launched, recruited for, completed and published this pilot trial of ketogenic therapy in weight-normalized anorexia nervosa. This paper is the culmination of many years of hard work--including from those who participated in the trial. A second study is already underway. One family's journey sparked one clinician-scientist to want to learn more. Together, Dr. Frank and the Scolnick family have challenged the field to explore the metabolic roots and treatment possibilities of a disorder in which current treatments fail far too many. Please share widely. A second nation-wide trial is enrolling now.

Do you know someone who is incredibly fit, yet still developed cancer? What about a dedicated marathon runner who suffered a heart attack in their fifties? Or an endurance athlete who developed Type 2 diabetes after years of logging miles? We all know someone who fits this description. We also know the member at the gym who has shown up consistently for a decade. They sweat through every workout and track every metric. Their body composition hasn't changed. They are still exhausted. Take the Full “What Is MetFix?” Course at whatismetfix.metfixclass.com…

GLP-1 weight loss drugs are here to stay, and I think this newly published paper highlights how they help: reducing food addiction (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4218…). Yes, with the addition of glucagon (e.g., retutrutide) there is possibly a modest direct increase in metabolic rate and fat loss. However, the main benefit is helping people overcome their food addictions. Of course, nobody is addicted to fat and protein. In all the neurobiology of food addictions in humans, addiction comes down to one macronutrient: Carbohydrates. Whether alone or combined with fat, carbs are what people crave and what must be controlled. Once a person can control their carb cravings, weight loss happens almost effortlessly. The weight loss drugs can help with that effort for a time, but they need to be used as a crutch until a person can successfully manage their cravings without that help.

Many people forget this about the body! Others will argue carbs are essential for exercise. They should read this: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2689… Well known Volek study from 2016 showing keto-endurance athletes conserve muscle glycogen the same as high carb athletes. No performance changes.

In this presentation, Nina Teicholz @bigfatsurprise reviews the history of seed oils, explaining that fats like soybean, corn, cottonseed, and canola oil are relatively new additions to the human diet. Before the 1900s, most cooking fats in Western countries were traditional animal fats like butter, lard, and tallow. Seed oils first entered the food supply through industrial hydrogenation processes used to create products like Crisco and margarine, which were heavily marketed as modern, “heart-healthy” replacements for animal fats. These oils became widely accepted not because of strong evidence, but through industry influence and the rise of the diet-heart hypothesis. Organizations like the American Heart Association promoted polyunsaturated vegetable oils beginning in the 1960s, despite clinical trials that failed to show clear reductions in mortality and, in some cases, found higher rates of cancer, gallstones, and stroke in groups consuming more vegetable oils. A major focus of the talk is the chemical instability of polyunsaturated fats. Because these oils contain multiple double bonds, they oxidize easily when exposed to heat, producing inflammatory and potentially toxic compounds such as aldehydes and acrolein. These oxidation products are absorbed into the body and may contribute to chronic disease processes. Nina concludes that while the evidence is stronger for some outcomes than others, there is substantial reason to question the widespread use of industrial seed oils—especially in fried and ultra-processed foods. Exercise has long been associated with reduced risk of cognitive decline, but the mechanisms behind its protective effects on the brain have remained only partially understood. New research points to a potential pathway involving a liver-derived enzyme, GPLD1, which may help maintain the integrity of the blood–brain barrier—a critical structure that becomes more vulnerable with age and is increasingly linked to neurodegenerative disease. While the strongest evidence so far comes from animal models, emerging human data support the broader connection between exercise, vascular health, and brain resilience. Taken together, the findings reinforce a familiar conclusion with deeper biological grounding: regular exercise is a powerful, multi-system intervention that may play a key role in preserving cognitive function over time. read more here brokenscience.org/is-exercis…
