The Lindy Effect is a concept stating that the future life expectancy of some non-perishable things (like an idea, a technology, or a habit) is proportional to their current age. In simple terms: the longer something has been around, the longer it is likely to remain around in the future. [1, 2, 3, 4]
It suggests that aging isn't the primary cause of extinction, but rather the age of the idea itself. For example, a book that has been in print for 50 years is likely to remain in print for another 50 years, whereas a brand-new book might be forgotten in a year. The term was coined by Albert Goldman in 1964, based on the "Lindy's" delicatessen in New York City, where comedians would gather and discuss whether a show would survive.
