Don’t think Ive watched a soccer/futbol game since the last World Cup. I’ll see if I can get into this World Cup tonight with the US actually being in it.
I was always really solid at soccer, but for my temperament/love of violent physical sports, I switched to American football eventually for my fall sport in HS, wrestling winter, rugby spring.
Soccer was very beneficial for me though for rugby, depending on what year, I was the guy who kicked for the extra point after a try/ did kick offs, and as a Michael Vick type scrummy/7s player, mastering the grubber helped me score multiple try’s, let alone, picking up from a ruck as scrummy and being able to boot 30-40 yards accurately for field position.
If soccer was full contact it would be one of the sickest sports and I’d have stuck with it. Almost wish I stuck with it hindsight just for High school, I was less than shmedium freshman/sophomore year of HS and coaches simply looked at my size.
Quit football after sophomore year because I didn’t get playing time despite being a starting cornerback 6-8 grade and 3rd down RB and varsity wrestler as a freshman and sophomore. Going into senior year I was named the wrestling captain and rugby, really hit puberty shortly after that fall sophomore fall and added 50lbs of mainly muscle.
Senior year the football coaches begged me to come back, their stud rb/LB and kicker was the opposite of me. Was a soccer phenom as a kid/ middle school. Should have been varsity for soccer as a freshman. Coach didn’t like him(literally became my class president and maybe one of the nicest and most genuine dudes I’ve ever met). He realized going into senior year this was likely his last chance to play what he loved since a kid, and went back to soccer his senior year and crushed it.
Football team ended up having their worst season EVER, my senior year, 0-11. My freshman year we won the D1 state championship at Gillette stadium.
Multiple games lost from missed field goal kicks. I know me and that soccer player semi loved it.
But yea. I rant. Looking forward to watching first soccer game in years, and playing first rugby tourney in a few years in 2 weeks.
I’m going to keep chirping all the people crying about Elon till the game. Have a good weekend peeps.
