Dear friends,
I am thrilled to share about a creative partnership with the Scotland-based magazine, The Candyman’s Trumpet, curated by the amazing @JackCaradoc .
This August, the magazine will shine a spotlight on poetry by Afghan women, with an entire section dedicated to their voices. I am honoured to serve as guest editor and curator for this special feature.
August 2026 marks the six-year anniversary of the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. Since their return to power, their regime has issued approximately 140 edicts, decrees or rules that restrict the freedoms and rights of women and girls, including severe restrictions on creative expressions such as poetry and arts.
For centuries, poetry has been both a deep-rooted tradition and a courageous act of resistance for Afghan women. Through this spotlight, we stand in solidarity and preserve the voices that are being silenced and repressed. With this spotlight, we bear witness to the daily realities of women and girls in Afghanistan today, and we say: keep reciting, keep writing. We are here, listening and reading.
The submission call is open to Afghan women in Afghanistan and in the diaspora.
Deadline - July 5th
Please share widely within your writing communities.

Nine years ago, Satrapi’s work gave my still developing identity the answers to the questions I had never dared to ask.
Forever alive for her works 💜
Thanks @walkngbookfairs where I had discovered this gem. #readingcommunity
Current read. Can’t help highlighting most of the lines!
You need to know what it is to live like this and have the gift to write like this— powerfully, unstoppably. @manishgaekwad you undoubtably know it all.
Must read! #readingcommunity

“I feel more comfortable expressing vulnerabilities in English [than Malayalam… it’s like the inability to express your emotions to a close friend, whereas you can rant your life story to a stranger in a café.”

So happy to receive this pic from my fellow writer friend Maryann with this warm note that made my day —-“Found a copy of your book at Jain Book Depot in Connaught Place in Delhi. It’s quite an old and iconic Delhi bookshop. 😊”
Gratitude 🙏
“Drag is a vibrant, free-form performance art…. Even though I didn’t have a queer protagonist in mind, I found myself thinking: Does freedom also mean the freedom to choose one’s gender identity and expression?”

Lyrical and introspective, the poems by @MitraSamal capture both vulnerability and strength, offering comfort and connection through thoughtful observations on human relationships and inner journeys.

Offbeat and smart. He tells a lot without directly telling it. Interesting dialogues. No overdose of emotions. Witty lines on every page. #readingcommunity
