Ouch!
The government wrote off close to £7bn in 2024–25 in an egregious example of poor value for money. MPs on the Public Accounts Committee have published a new report 📄 Read more 👇 committees.parliament.uk/com…

One practical effect of price controls in Scotland will be shoppers travelling across the border from England to fill their cars/vans with inexpensive groceries. If those products are being sold with near-zero profit margins, there is no incentive for the border-adjacent retailers to continually stock-up in order to satisfy English buyers. The shelves will be empty for local Scots. The political solution will be a requirement to show proof of residency before buying a loaf of bread. @bbcnickrobinson #r4today @BBCNews

I hope 'reading for pleasure' places just as much emphasis on non-fiction as fiction.

My latest @NAOorguk report looks at DfT's support for innovation. While the work is focused on transport, there are several areas of learning that other government departments will find useful, particularly relating to managing high-risk innovation activity. 👇
Innovation is seen by @transportgovuk as key to tackling some of the challenges facing the transport sector today. How can it unlock economic, environmental and consumer benefits by strengthening support for new science and technology in transport? ➡️ nao.org.uk/reports/innovatio…

BOOK REVIEW: James Dyson's 'Invention: A Life' (published by Simon & Schuster, 2021). This autobiography covers the seven decades from Dyson's childhood in Norfolk (UK) through to the establishment of his global (and personally controlled) eponymous company. Full of fascinating insights, and particularly strong on the nerve-jangling ups and downs of entrepreneurial life. Much better than Dyson’s first autobiography, 'Against the Odds' (2011), which had been written in collaboration with the young journalist, Giles Coren. By contrast, 'Invention: A Life' was developed with the experienced nonfiction author, Jonathan Glancey. Recommended. @guardianglancey @Dyson

Congratulations to Vaire Computing Senior Scientist Dr Frank @MikePFrank for his third reversible computing patent, issued for work done at Sandia National Labs prior to joining @VaireHQ 👏
Just issued today! @SandiaLabs U.S. Patent #12,620,993, "BALLISTIC SUPERCONDUCTING CIRCUIT FOR ASYNCHRONOUS REVERSIBLE LOGIC ELEMENT," M.P. Frank (now at @VaireHQ), R.M. Lewis, and S.B. Kaplan (contractor).

High profile technologies don't always offer anything of value (except to the bank balances of their promoters). My favourite contemporary example is the laughable Boston Dynamics robot dog or, even worse, their load-carrying BigDog (image attached). What they gain in agility (debatable), they lose in speed of movement and manufacturing costs. What problems are they trying to solve? Why not simply put rugged wheels on a chassis with a range of attachments? @DARPA scatters research funds like confetti. It's the American taxpayer that suffers.

A few years ago I proposed using @what3words as the mechanism for remembering a very strong password. Simply visualise a specific geographical location known only to you. The @What3words app will give you 3 random words. If you happen to forget those 3 words, simply use the app to find the location/password again. For some reason, the What3Words company didn't promote it. @katebevan @EvanHD #bbcpm @BBCNews

BOOK REVIEW: Exactly, by Simon Winchester (Collins, 2018). A history of exactitude and metrology. It's an informative read, but not recommended for professional technologists, engineers or scientists; frankly, it's too wordy and imprecise! My short Substack review is here: bit.ly/MoarReview4

It has been great to hear the #PM programme on @BBCRadio4 engaging with the residents of rural Scotland (especially farmers), people who are rarely given a voice in the national media. The UK's geographical extremities are both too interesting and too important to ignore. Please follow up with visits to Cornwall, Ceredigion, Coleraine, and Kirkwall. @EvanHD @BBCPM

I've been training various AI tools on the contents of my book. Both @Copilot (from @Microsoft) and @grok (here on @X) were cognitively sharp, comprehending almost everything on the first pass. However, @GeminiApp (belonging to @Google) struggled. It made some spurious assumptions and identified nonexistent relationships between ideas. With further training it improved. All 3 products were just a little too chatty, chummy and sycophantic for my liking. Tone it down, please. Copilot scores 4 out of 5 Grok scores 4 out of 5 Gemini scores 2 out of 5 (some catching up to do!) Altogether...impressive.

⚛️ Following recent government investment and the publication of the UK’s fusion strategy, it was a pleasure to host our Fusion Business Group, exploring key topics including skills development, STEM engagement, public awareness, and insurance. The strength of momentum within the fusion sector was clear, highlighted by insightful member spotlights from Acuity Engineering, @BilfingerUK, EKIUM, and digiLab. We concluded with a collaborative workshop focused on how the fusion industry can transition from a science-led field to an engineering-driven sector, unlocking its full growth potential. ⚡ Thank you to our new Chair, Steve Lawler (Helixos), for hosting, and to all our speakers and attendees for their valuable contributions. We also extend our thanks to @Arup for hosting the event and to @PA_Consulting for the drinks reception. 💬 If you would like to learn more about the NIA’s collaboration with the Fusion Industry Association, please feel free to reach out to Ella.Ashdown@NIAUK.org. #fusion #nuclear #energy
