Every Pride season, a familiar narrative appears: LGB people are victims. Things are terrible. Send money. The reality is more complicated, and more interesting. Britain has some of the strongest legal protections for LGB people in the world. Civil partnerships. Equal marriage. Hate crime legislation. Adoption rights. Employment protection. These were fought for, won, and they’re real. What is also real: those protections are being quietly eroded in areas most people don’t notice. LGB-only spaces being legally challenged. Young gay and lesbian people being fast-tracked to medical treatment. The specific needs of gay and bi men – particularly around chemsex – being swallowed into an LGBTQ acronym that doesn’t serve them. LGB Alliance isn’t in the business of telling people things are hopeless. We’re in the business of being specific about what’s actually happening and doing something about it. When I worked at the Scottish Parliament, there were some MSPs who were shocked to find out that the workplace smoking ban meant that the smoking room in the Parliament building had to close. They couldn’t believe the law applied to them. They huffed and puffed about it, complaining to the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body - trying to argue that they were exempt from having to comply with the law. Same energy.

What is so disturbing is that I have not seen you ever attempt to respond substantively to the arguments about how trans ideology threatens women's rights and requires that people buy into the metaphysical beliefs of others--which is in fundamental opposition to a liberal pluralistic society. You just repeat the same old trans slogans. Slogans aren't arguments. You are a Member of Parliament. You have an obligation to conduct the discussion on a level that you consistently fail to meet.
