All you need to know about Fred Jameson is that despite being one of the greatest American thinkers of all time, he responded to every single one of his student’s weekly reflections every week, for 60 students, in detail with thoughtful commentary. Kindest most generous soul

It’s really hard for me to express exactly how much this means to me…so I tried to write a substack about it. Immeasurable thanks to Lynne Nugent and everyone at The Iowa Review, this is a real bucket list thing for me. open.substack.com/pub/margar…

Great example of how good history of technology makes for good cultural studies
here is my jeremiad against the raw milk movement, against the historical background of what actually drove pasteurization laws -- infants dying of milk-borne tuberculosis! buttondown.com/theswordandth…

A really compelling observation in Heffington's "Without Children" is that the nuclear family is not only a bad way to raise children, but its historical novelty makes its rise as a normative standard a solid factor in the now two-century-old falling birthrate.

I don’t think there’s a conspiracy or anything but the fact that Dobbs was so quickly followed by a pronatalist intellectual trend—including on the putative left!—that explicitly casts childless women as decadent, narcissistic, and contemptible is … conspicuous.

Gotta love the new genre tweet of from millennial women that’s like “I can’t relate to all these divorce books because unlike you losers *my* husband is a perfect kindly angel who does all the housework.” As if patriarchy is merely a skill issue 🤪

I said earlier the strongest element in media isn't bias, but narrative. That's what I've learned from 25 years in this industry. Let me give you a non-political example. Do you remember how journalists handled a "major" story in 2001? No, I'm not talking about 9/11. 1/
They actually chose to run the story in the print edition even after the WH denial, under a slightly caveated headline: "Parkinson’s Expert Visited White House 8 Times in 8 Months, but Why Is Unclear" "Why Is Unclear" is not a phrase that should appear in a new headline.

If billionaires paid their fair share of taxes we wouldn’t have to rely on these “gifts” bestowed on a few and instead could offer universal college. Just saying.
