High waves lashed the coast of Taitung County Wednesday evening as #Typhoon Kong-rey approached #Taiwan. Residents in Taitung were seen collecting sandbags for flood prevention. The typhoon is expected to make landfall in Hualien or Taitung in eastern Taiwan Thursday afternoon.

🇹🇼Kong-Rey Could Be Taiwan's Largest Since 1996🌀 🌀 Typhoon #KongRey in Taiwan intensified into a super typhoon and now poses a significant threat to the Northwest Pacific. 💨 With wind speeds reaching 230 km/h and gusts exceeding this, Kong-Rey is one of the most powerful storms in the region this year. 🌀 According to @dost_pagasa, the typhoon is expected to approach Taiwan by October 31, potentially marking the most significant impact on Taiwan since 1996, when Typhoon Herb made landfall. ⚠️ Warnings are released across Taiwan, where authorities are bracing for heavy rains and dangerous winds. 🇵🇭 This typhoon also affects the northern Philippines, particularly regions still recovering from Typhoon Trami, and could cause additional flooding and damage as it progresses.

Hard to believe the images I’ve been seeing from my hometown. It’s in the desert/high plains. This kind of flooding is just incredibly rare there.

My dear hometown is experiencing catastrophic flooding in parts of the city—homes and businesses lost, cars washed away, and at least one death. Never seen anything like it in this desert community. 😔
