Visited an elementary school today that intentionally schedules the same amount of time to teach math as they do for reading. Finally. I asked the principal how he made that happened. He looked at me sort of surprised and said, “That’s just what you do!” Yes sir. Yes it is.

1) Calling "low" kids "strivers" doesn't help. 2) Being surprised a "low" child understood a mathematical concept through a strategy that isn't a standard US algorithm is not ok. Redefining how you think about your students is what you should be doing instead.
