Fractures caused by spinal tumors often require vertebral augmentation โ€“ an injection procedure that stabilizes the spine using bone cement โ€“ but overly stiff materials can shift harmful stresses to surrounding bone and undermine long-term stability. Aiming to resolve this tradeoff, researchers developed a CT-based computer model informed by laboratory spine testing to study vertebral augmentation in cancer-weakened vertebrae. They compared different fill volumes and cement stiffnesses to see how each combination affected both fracture resistance and internal stress patterns. The analysis identified a mechanical โ€œsweet spot,โ€ where moderate material stiffness restored strength without inducing excessive stress concentrations. In vertebral augmentation, the future of safer stabilization lies not in maximizing stiffness, but in selecting materials that balance strength with controlled force distribution. ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ: link.springer.com/article/10โ€ฆ ๐—ฆ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐˜†: Optimization of Bone Cement Stiffness in Metastatic Vertebral Augmentation: Balancing Strength Restoration and Stress Redistribution ๐—”๐˜‚๐˜๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜€: Mehran Fereydoonpour, Asghar Rezaei, Lichun Lu, Mariusz Ziejewski, and Ghodrat Karami @NDSU @NDSUEngineering @MayoClinic ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ฏ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐˜: link.springer.com/journal/10โ€ฆ

Itโ€™s critical for North Dakota students to develop skills in science, technology, engineering and math, and to be exposed to STEM fields at an early age. Weโ€™re excited about the potential for this new partnership between Gateway to Science and @NDSU's College of Engineering to spark curiosity in young people, support workforce development and help shape North Dakotaโ€™s future.

Ben Bloom, a student majoring in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at NDSU, is gaining hands-on experience assisting with a hydroponics research project this summer. His role includes helping set up and monitor the progress of an experiment focused on growing lettuce hydroponically using water from different sources. The goal? To determine whether distinct water sources offer any advantages when it comes to hydroponic production. We're proud to see students like Ben applying their skills in real-world research that supports innovation in sustainable agriculture!
