Dateline: AbaSamuel Prison, Ethiopia ...the exhilarating moment when I visited the AbaSamuel Prisons, Addis Ababa to break the news to our boys that they will soon be returning home for service of the remainder of their prison terms as a result of the Prisoner Transfer Agreement Nigeria has just signed with the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. Renewed Joy; Renewed Hope. We have already lost four of the Inmates, and several others are critically ill and need better care and medical assistance. This Prisoner Transfer Agreement with the Government of Ethiopia is a landmark. Under the Citizen Diplomacy imperative of the Renewed Hope Agenda, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, remains committed to the welfare and protection of Nigerian Citizens abroad. We will continue to work actively to ensure that our nationals abroad feel the full weight of their Home Government.

President @officialABAT has praised the former Head of State for continuing “to serve as a respected elder statesman, promoting peace, national unity, democratic stability, and responsible political engagement” through the National Peace Committee. He also directed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), @GovWike, to allocate a befitting parcel of land within the nation’s capital to build an office for the Abdulsalami Abubakar African Resource Centre (AAARC). The President stated this on Saturday in Abuja during the public presentation of three books, ‘A Call of Duty: My Autobiography’, ‘Nigeria’s Grand Patriot’, and ‘Mediating for Peace in Africa’, in honour of General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd). Eulogising the former Nigerian leader at the book launch, which coincided with his 84th birthday anniversary, President @officialABAT, who was represented by his deputy, Vice President @KashimSM, described the presence of dignitaries from both home and abroad at the event as a fitting tribute to General Abubakar’s life. He justified why the AAARC deserves a befitting office in Abuja, saying, “The establishment of the Abdulsalami Abubakar African Resource Centre is a worthy initiative that aligns with the values General Abubakar has championed throughout his life. “In recognition of its importance, I hereby direct the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to allocate a suitable parcel of land within the Federal Capital Territory for the development of the Centre and the advancement of its mission,” he directed.

Earlier today, I joined Governor Dikko Umaru Radda and other dignitaries at the National Mosque, Abuja, for the funeral prayer of Hajiya Fatima Ladi Binta Musa Musawa, mother of the Honourable Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa. Her passing is a painful loss to the Musawa family and all who knew her. We take solace in the legacy of faith, dignity, compassion, and service she leaves behind. I extend my heartfelt condolences to Hannatu, the entire Musawa family, and all loved ones mourning this loss. May Almighty Allah forgive her shortcomings, grant her Aljannatul Firdaus, and grant the family the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss, ameen. "Your Country will not desert you...Your President knows you are here." This was the message of hope, and promise that we took to Nigerian inmates at the AbaSamuel Prisons, Ethiopia. We signed, a few days ago, a bilateral Prisoner Transfer Agreement with the Government of Ethiopia. We have lost four Nigerian Prisoners within the time frame it has taken for the negotiations, judicial vetting and the final conclusion of this agreement. This Agreement is rooted in the principles of humanity, justice and cooperation between our two nations. I wish, on behalf of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for whom the welfare and protection of Nigerian citizens abroad remains a priority, to convey our sincere appreciation to the Government and People of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. While we continue to encourage our citizens living and traveling abroad to respect the laws of their host countries, and uphold the good name of our nation, we also remain committed to ensuring that those who find themselves in conflict with the law will not be totally abandoned to their fate but accorded their rights under applicable legal frameworks.

Fellow Nigerians, 27 years ago, many doubted democracy would survive here because of our diversity. Today, our diversity sustains our democracy. The road ahead is steep. But June 12 reminds us: Nigerians do not break. We bend, we bleed, but we do not break. Let us renew our covenant: That the labours of our heroes past shall never be in vain, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from this land. May God bless the heroes of our democracy. May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. May God continue to bless us all. Happy Democracy Day. BOLA AHMED TINUBU, GCFR President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Federal Republic of Nigeria
