While the Japanese #Imperial State Visit to the #Netherlands is about to start, the Dutch frigate ‘De Ruyter’ pays a call to the Port of #Tokyo. Both #Defence Ministers came to my residence to watch the World Cup #soccer game between our countries (a rather diplomatic draw 2-2).

Soms komen zaken heel toevallig bij elkaar. Ik ben de komende dagen in Japan voor gesprekken over onze industrie én het ontvangen van de bemanning van ons fregat De Ruyter in Tokio. De veiligheid in deze regio is immers nauw verbonden met die van ons. Dit allemaal maanden geleden al gepland. Hoe bijzonder dat het dan gelijk valt met het bezoek van de Japanse keizer aan Nederland én de wedstrijd Japan-Nederland. Dus met collega @shinjirokoiz de wekkers vroeg gezet (wedstrijd begon hier om 05:00 in de ochtend 😳) om samen met de teams te kijken. Heel even dacht ik dat we gingen winnen, maar om de diplomatieke banden maar goed te houden, rondden we af op een 2-2. Dank voor een mooie wedstrijd en dank voor de gezelligheid Japan!

Ties between the Netherlands and Japan are good and go back a long way: we have enjoyed diplomatic relations for 426 years. The importance of our solid and unique partnership will be reaffirmed by the Emperor of Japan’s upcoming state visit. This morning I spoke with Prime Minister @takaichi_sanae about our good trade relations, cooperation on security and defence, and the importance of coordinating economic security. As partners, we are working ever more closely together to tackle shared challenges.

Onze banden met Japan zijn goed en gaan daarnaast al lang terug: al 426 jaar hebben we diplomatiek contact met elkaar. Het belang van ons unieke en betrouwbare partnerschap wordt nog verder onderstreept door het staatsbezoek dat de Keizer van Japan binnenkort aan Nederland brengt. Vanochtend sprak ik met premier @takaichi_sanae, onder meer over de goede handelsrelaties, de samenwerking op gebied van veiligheid en defensie en het belang van coördinatie over economische veiligheid. We werken als partners steeds nauwer samen om gedeelde uitdagingen het hoofd te bieden.
