UK National Neonatal Research Database (NNRD): neonatal units collaborating to benefit babies via real-world data via @HDR_UK Gateway & Imperial College London
Important understandable point @NICU_Musings. This is the fundamental (too often repeated) problem of focusing research on unvalidated surrogate outcomes. Just as we showed that GMCSF increases WCC in growth restricted preterms but does not result in patient benefit (Lancet 2009)
Although darbepoetin for newborns 23-29 weeks increased RBCs and decreased transfusions sadly it didn’t translate into better neurodevelopmental outcome
The silver bullet remains elusive!

There is just no equivalent replacement for mother's milk
Replacing 1 day of mixed feeds, donor milk or NPO w/ mother's milk ⬆️ cognitive, language and motor development.
A 1-day reallocation of NPO to either mother's milk, mixed feeds or donor milk ⬇️ signif NDI, CP and/or NEC
The NNRD is used to improve the care of newborn babies and their families in many ways. The information in the NNRD is used for research studies to find out which treatments work best, in audits that measure how well neonatal units are practising and to support legislative change
The COLLABORATE study will tackle 2 longstanding, uncertainties in preterm nutrition: should pasteurised donor milk or preterm formula be used when a supplement for own mother's milk is needed, and is routine protein-carbohydrate fortification of human milk beneficial and safe?
A fantastic gathering at Perinatal Science International 2025 on the iconic Venetian island of San Servolo. Inspiring, stimulating discussions on strengthening perinatal research from bench to bedside to policy! Thank you to all delegates!
We invite you to join one of our upcoming COLLABORATE webinar series where the investigators will explain the study and provide opportunity for discussion and questions.
