The wonderful world of graphic novels was opened to me by Art Spiegelman’s Maus and Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis. They were foundational texts, introducing me to a thrilling literary form.
In a novel, we remember paragraphs. In a graphic novel, we remember panels. 1/2

This article is getting a kind of love I didn’t expect, and my inbox is now full of VD Satheesan anecdotes. Thank you. A holler out to someone like a younger me, sitting in a journalism college right now: what you do when you aren’t reporting matters too. The things you read, the conversations you carry, the places you sit in without purpose, you’re quietly collecting moments for a future story there as well. The @KeralaLitFest anecdote in this story came from one such moment. It took me two years to find it a home. Teju Cole once wrote about “when seeing becomes sacred.” Reporting is perhaps learning how to keep seeing.
