We’ve gained a lot of followers this season so here’s a bit about me!
(LONG POST)
🌪️ I’m Rob McBay better known as Storm Chaser Rob
I was born and raised in North Alabama. Where tornadoes are part of the culture and everyday life.
I was almost a victim of the Tanner EF4 on 4/27/2011. And I still fell in love with tornadoes. 🤷♂️
This is year 4 of full time chasing and if there’s one thing you’ll learn about me it’s that I’m cut from a different cloth and they don’t make that fabric anymore.💪
I run the Chasin' Chaos Storm Team and we don’t just chase storms for the footage. We build our own probes and conduct science missions focused on understanding Dixie Alley tornadoes. Measuring surface wind speeds. Collecting real world data. Looking for the features that actually matter when it comes to forecasting these monsters. 🌪️
No suit and tie here. I grew up on Section 8 and paper plates. Raised on Jackass, redneck ingenuity, a little Lynyrd Skynyrd, and a little The Last Mr. Bigg. Learning how to make something out of nothing and figuring it out as you go has always been part of who I am.
I’m raw and gritty. I speak my mind and stand on what I say. I don’t lose sleep over who likes me and who doesn’t. You’ll probably hear me say something wild from time to time because I’ve never been good at pretending to be someone I’m not.
My brain runs about 100 mph all the time. I’m pretty sure I’ve got ADHD and wouldn’t be shocked if a touch of the ‘tism is in there too. I come up with about 53 ideas a day and maybe finish 3 of them. But every now and then one of those ideas turns into a tornado probe or some other science mission that probably shouldn’t work but somehow does.
But underneath all of that…
I’m a husband, a father, and someone who genuinely cares about people. When communities get hit, we help however we can because that’s bigger than views and social media.
I don’t always post the groundwork. The dark days. The things that stick with you long after the storms are gone. There are parts of this life that don’t belong on social media, and I keep those private. As they should be.
What you will see are the storms. The jokes. The ideas. The science. The road trips. The close calls. The wins and failures.
The moments that remind you just how powerful nature really is.
And tornadoes… they still blow my mind every single time. Who knew the air could just get up and start crip walking? They’re terrifying, beautiful, and one of the most incredible things on this planet. And I love them. My goal is to understand Dixie Alley tornadoes better by measuring surface winds and identifying the features that matter most when forecasting them.
This page isn’t polished weather TV. No fake persona. Somewhere between PG-13 and R Rated.
No pretending to be something I’m not. Just real storm chasing, real science, bad jokes, big ideas, and a guy trying to understand the storms he’s spent years mesmerized by.
If that’s your kind of content, hit follow and come along for the ride.
