People who have finished a shed into an office, how'd you insulate the ceiling? Mine has an attic area with gable vents on 2 ends. I'm hoping for R49. Thinking I'll need an attic hatch and blown in insulation, but don't know how to insulate/seal the hatch then. @aarondfrancis?

Is there some sort of “lol no” counter petition I can sign? Or maybe a poll? The funny thing with a petition is the “yay”s are known and the “nay”s are silent. A poll would allow everyone to know how many “nay”s there are.
A group of Lefist Activists are pushing for the Ruby on Rails project to remove the project’s founder (@dhh) because they claim he “holds racist and transphobic views” and “other traits undesirable”. This group, which compares themselves to the French resistance during WWII, is also demanding the adoption of a “modern Code of Conduct”. github.com/Floppy/plan-vert-…

hottest day of the year in the UK and I have to go and do an 8 hour shift. Wish me luck.

I created "High Leverage Rails" (link in tweet below, sign up now for your launch day discount!) to show you how simple yet powerful web development can be when you unlock the power of vanilla Rails and vanilla SQLite.

She didn’t lose because she’s a woman, she lost because her policies suck.

This is the epitome of the US government right here: - HTML served as plain text - <br /> <br /> <br /> - <a> without a href - align="center" - font-family without a fallback to sans-serif - pt - no doctype - no <head> - “…..” / “..” for ellipsis

To be clear, the former is what happens when you entrust AI to do your dirty work, and the latter is what happens when you entrust a human to do it. An AI scan of the database would have deleted your channel. A human took one look and said “lolwut?” and fixed it.

“Just one more Node module and the UX will be perfect” -Every React dev ever Performance is UX, arguably the most important UX. Dial-up in the 90s was so much more usable than this…

Anyone who professionally builds for the Web should read the Reckoning series by @slightlylate Start with this case-study of how the California food stamps signup site takes 29.5s to become interactive on a rural internet connection: infrequently.org/2024/08/obj…

I hate that Twitter incentivizes being a troll. Such wisdom in this Tweet. Thanks for your helpful comment, Theo. Whatever pumps those ad viewer numbers up so Elon sends the paycheck, am I right?

Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with everything I want to do (or need to do) and the solution has always been the same: do literally anything. aaronfrancis.com/2024/do-lit…

This exactly. So many people have overcomplicated tech stacks so that they can scale to the moon in an instant, while having 0 customers and hoping their app hits the lottery. Ship fast. Get customers. See if anyone even likes your idea. Fail fast if necessary.

Bingo. So many developers act like temporarily embarrassed Web Scale operators who are just days away from dealing with Meta-levels of traffic and load.

Friendly reminder to everyone, Cloudflare offers “Unmetered DDoS Protection” in its free tier. Everyone should be using it, otherwise it’s not a matter of “if” you’ll get DDoSed, but “when”. Attackers are out there DDoSing sites and demanding ransoms to make it stop.

We saw 80,000 req/sec at the peak on this attack! Which isn't actually that crazy by DDoS standards, but still enough to flood. But yeah, @cloudflare's excellent shielding is sending it all into the bit shredder now.

I once shaved *minutes* off a test suite that did a ton of ActiveRecord queries by doing this.
Testing performance tip: Disable logging in the test environment. These are almost always not needed and can be easily enabled otherwise, but they waste a lot of tests run time. I just measured, and our app spends 9%⚡️of the test run time just doing logging! 😱

Friends, I could use your help. Apparently I've fallen victim to the algorithms that rule over us. Please visit hopsoft.io and report a false positive. Feel free to provide details about me (github.com/hopsoft) or my projects. Thank you. 🙏

Nerd BFCM stats: Shopify’s egress processed 145 billion requests on Friday. App servers handled peak of ~60 million requests per minute. Increase of 38%. Total GMV was $4.1b, up by 22% from last year. But Rails doesn't scale so what are we even doing 🤷‍♂️
