Woke up to the
@MyShakeApp alarm earlier.
Out of curiosity I pulled the data for the epicenter's region, every quake over 4.5 since 1984.
The epicenter, Boulder Creek (Zayante fault) is near the Loma Prieta earthquake's epicenter. That event also happens to be the last time this region had an earthquake of this magnitude.
It's been a great reminder that we are due for massive earthquake, some say ~70% by 2030s others say 2040s etc. The Zayante fault has already been game planned and was made into a 7.5 scale "scenario" by the USGS in 2017. Based on that data if the big one does hit this fault at a normal depth, damage to far away places like SF will likely be limited. The Loma Prieta earthquake was uniquely deep (long range propagation -> liquefaction), its foreshocks were also deeper than usual. However, a shallower quake means damage near the epicenter could/would be far worse.
During times like this it feels good to be bedrockmaxxing.
