A little girl in Boston went home one day and asked her Nigerian mother if she could change her name to Zoe. Nobody at school could say Uzoamaka. Her mother was cooking. She didn't even turn around. "If they can learn to say Tchaikovsky, Michelangelo, and Dostoyevsky, they can learn to say Uzoamaka." That girl kept her name. Then she went to Hollywood and won three Emmy Awards. And now the whole world knows exactly how to say Uzoamaka Aduba. Your name is not a burden. It's a prophecy.

I am sure this xenophobe is only talking about churches owned by African migrants. In his colonised mind, the Catholic Church, Mosques, Synagogues, Hindu Temples etc, are not foreign churches
Foreign churches must be closed in South Africa.

He told us clearly that if he doesn't give us 24/7 electricity within 4 years, we shouldn't vote for him in 2027. Have you forgotten?

You can always tell when a Nigerian writer did not grow up or live in Nigeria by how they write

Interesting how Matt Damon and Lupita Nyong’o both have exactly the same amount of Greek heritage (none), but the Internet is only furious about one casting choice and not the other. Riddle me that.

I suspect AI will drive me off social media because you can't escape LLM-generated text on any platform and I don't want to read literally any of that (and my job requires me to read a lot of it already)

If you claim to be a critic, but refuse to apply critical thinking to the Bible and your religion, then your criticism is selective, not intellectual. Real criticism should examine everything, including sacred texts, with the same standards of logic, evidence, and scrutiny.

You understand how casual misogyny translates to femicide. You understand how racism leads to black deaths, in the streets, in medicine and in contact with law enforcement in places like the US. But suddenly you do not understand the connection between homophobia and gay people being killed. Difference of opinion and it is homophobia in a country that kills gay people. In a country where people will go to the funeral of a gay person who was murdered and celebrate. This is the difference of opinion you want to defend?

She co-founded a publishing house in Abuja in 2006 with no business training and no publishing background. Twenty years later Cassava Republic Press has offices in London, authors on international prize lists and a backlist that has shaped a generation of African readers.
