What if we could detect groundwater contamination before it happens?
Vadose zone research, conducted by scientists at the University of Nebraska Water Sciences Laboratory, makes that possible.
By analyzing soil layers between the surface and the aquifer, researchers can predict how contaminants like nitrate move over time, providing communities critical lead time to act.

The seminar, titled “Toxic Chemicals at the Former AltEn Ethanol Plant: Update to the Environmental and Human Health Assessment,” will share findings from a multi-university study (UNL, UNMC, and Creighton University) on pesticide contamination at the former AltEn plant near Mead, Nebraska, including impacts on water quality, wildlife, and human health. On Tuesday, March 24, the Nebraska Water Center will host another virtual office hours session from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
This month we'll focus on the open USGS 104b pre-proposal opportunity and will hear from UNL's Office of Research staff.

The paid fellowship ($16/hour) invites full-time Nebraska undergraduate students graduating in 2027 or 2028 to work up to 35 hours per week on a faculty-mentored water research project leading to a publication.

Agenda includes a 2:00 p.m. open discussion for research ideas and questions, followed at 3:00 p.m. by perspectives on future funding opportunities and best practices from Nathan Meier and Jennifer Nelson of UNL’s Office of Research and Innovation, and Steve Owen of Lincoln Transportation & Utilities. This past September, UNL student Sara Brock-Contreras, represented Nebraska in Washington D.C. She met with legislators, advocating for science and urging them to invest in STEM education and other Acts.
