We're keeping a close eye on Friday afternoon and evening for the potential of severe thunderstorms across northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia. The Storm Prediction Center has already placed areas north of I-40 under a Level 2 (Slight) Risk for severe weather. Current forecast guidance indicates plenty of instability will be available for thunderstorms to develop during the afternoon, with storm coverage increasing into the evening hours. The strongest storms may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts over 60 mph and large hail. If you have outdoor plans Friday evening, it's a good idea to have an indoor backup plan and ensure you have multiple ways to receive weather warnings

Elevated Flood Risk Monday Across the Region A very moisture-rich air mass will move into the area Monday, creating favorable conditions for heavy to locally excessive rainfall. According to the National Weather Service, precipitable water values are forecast to approach record levels for early June across the region. Any showers or thunderstorms that develop will be capable of producing rainfall rates exceeding 2 inches per hour, which could quickly overwhelm drainage systems and lead to flash flooding, especially in urban areas, low-lying locations, and near small streams. Not everyone will experience flooding, but areas that repeatedly see heavy rainfall could face localized flooding issues. If you live in a flood-prone area, now is a good time to review your safety plans and ensure you have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
