Here is the promised update! Now the EPA has released their statement we can reveal all the disgusting details of the ‘tar balls’....
...which are actually human-generated waste of fat and grease!
Here’s what @UNSWScience and MWAC found… thread below! 🧵
#HappyDiwali2024 to all that celebrating this great festival. Our very own Suji Sharma treated us with an amazing three course meal during group meeting today. #ozchem
At @UNSWScience we have been investigating the tar balls that washed up on Coogee and other Sydney beaches.
What do we know (and not know!) so far?
Here comes our thread!
Many thanks to @PolyzosAP of the @PolyzosLab for being so kind giving us his excellently designed photoreactor, which was instrumental for this project.
It's fun to decipher reaction mechanism with meticulously designed control experiments. This paper from our group is All About That Base(-mediated oxidative 1,2-aryl migration) #ozchem

In #OrgLett: @NguyenLabUNSW reports interesting mechanistic insights into a 1,2-aryl migration in the visible-light mediated reaction between benzoquinones, alkynes and diamines to form quinoxaline derivatives go.acs.org/bas
1/2 A team of UNSW chemists led by Prof. @NeerajChemUNSW have developed a novel battery component that could make lithium-ion batteries more efficient, affordable and sustainable.

Great visit to the Justus von Liebig museum, with a special tour guide being @prsgroupjlu himself. Amazing to hear about Liebig’s revolutionary vision in organic chemistry and agricultural science. Liebig was the one shaping up how we still do organic chemistry education today.
My mini-seminar tour around Germany has ended with a very nice visit to TU Berlin @TUB_Chem. Amazing hospitality by Martin Oestreich @Silicon_Martin with awesome behind the scene stories about exciting chemistry developed in the Oestreich lab!
