I had to share this ironic email exchange.... BMJ Global Health @GlobalHealthBMJ just emailed to ask if I’m still submitting my piece on self-reliance in global health which I had to withdraw earlier because I couldn’t afford their Article Processing Charge. My answer: “Thank you for your message though I must confess it rubs salt to my wounds and stings more than you may have intended. Yes, I had indeed written the piece “……..” with BMJ Global Health in mind—optimistically so. But after the initial encouragement and interest, I was met with the ultimate global health irony: a prohibitive Article Processing Charge. And so, in a bitterly poetic twist, I had to withdraw it—not for lack of merit, but for lack of means. The article has since been accepted and published elsewhere, in a space that practices the equity it preaches. Thank you once again for your note. I wish it had come earlier, with a waiver.
